On Friday 5 August, 33 Year 9 boys joined students from St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School to attend the Aspiring Leaders Summit, following on from a six-month pastoral learning course in leadership.

The summit involved three workshops and a guest lecture, covering the topics of mindfulness, understanding empathy and inclusion.

Stuart Waddington discussed what it means to be ‘fit to lead’ in the 21st century and spoke about the importance of being decisive, thoughtful and agile when dealing with VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) in the world.

Nick Marshall, the Local Australian of the Year who started the Albatross Nippers Programme at Nobby’s Beach, spoke about the importance of the 3 Cs—care, connection and communication—and using leadership to make the world more inclusive for everyone.

Alison Lalieu from Courageous Leadership Hub discussed empathy (and how it is different to sympathy), and how empathetic leaders understand how to get the best out of their teams.

Rhys Ibbott from Wave to Wellness spoke about increasing self-awareness to assist in being decisive and grounded as a leader, and explained the benefits of mindfulness in helping stay calm in stressful situations.

Two of the attendees, Max Dell and Junee Kim said, ‘it was great to work with the St Margaret’s students in our teams for the day. Leadership is a complicated and ongoing process that involves being open to constantly learning and re-evaluating.’
