Churchie's Open Chess team competed on behalf of all Queensland schools to win the Secondary Open Division of the 2019 Australian Schools Teams Chess Championships, hosted by Canberra Grammar School.
The team of Alexavier Ly-Liu (Year 8), Michael Ostapenko (Year 10), Captain Henry Slater-Jones (Year 12), Jason Wang (Year 10) and Dashiell Young (Year 9), stewarded by Director of Chess Mr Max Condon, played a mature and challenging style of chess to take out the title, beating competition favourites, Scotch College, by half a point.
Churchie is the only Queensland team to have won this award, which was also won by Churchie in 2002 by a dream team led by Old Boy and chess grandmaster David Smerdon.
'National titles are not easy to come by at any level or in any sport and are often decided by the team that holds its nerve the longest by the smallest of margins,' Max said.
'I extend my heartfelt thanks to those who have worked tirelessly to support our chess programme to date. You all have a share in this amazing result.'
