Primary chess team
Last weekend at the 2020 National Interschool Chess Championship, held online from The Centenary Library, our primary chess team represented Queensland and won the National Primary Open title, and our secondary team, also representing Queensland, came second in the Premier Open Secondary division.
These are our best results to date at both a state and national level for any Queensland team and the Churchie Chess programme. Our primary team, consisting of Zerui Xing (Year 3) board one, Kevin Chou (Year 6) board two, Arden Young (Year 6) board three, Christopher Mathew (Year 6) board four and Daylin Johnson (Year six) reserve, coached by Hughston Parle, led from the front throughout the six-round tournament.
Our premier team, the 2019 national champions, only lost a single game throughout their tournament, which resulted in them placing second in the Premier Open Secondary division. This is the most challenging and prestigious secondary schools tournament in the country, and they played exceptionally well in a gruelling seven-round tournament with over 15 hours play time. Well done to Sravan Renjith (Year 7) board one, Michael Ostapenko (Year 11) board two, Jason Wang (Year 11) board three, Alexavier Ly-Liu (Year 9) board three, and reserves Dashiell Young (Year 10) and Allan Li (Year 10).
Thank you to Deputy Headmaster Co-curricular and HR Mr John Frare, senior coach Mr Alex Wohl, primary team coaches Hughston Parle, and our players and their families, who have worked tirelessly on the Churchie Chess programme this year.
