Preparing students for careers

Beth Gilpatrick joined Churchie at the beginning of 2020 as Careers and Guidance Counsellor and Mathematics Teacher. Having previously been employed as the Assistant Director of Studies and Careers Advisor at Townsville Grammar School, Beth brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a counsellor and teacher.

As a careers and guidance counsellor, Beth provides a crucial service for students with regard to post-school study and careers.

‘What I do is teach students how to make decisions by looking at the patterns in their life and the problems they want to solve in the world. It is important to keep options open, gaining a broad range of skills to become more employable in the future. I focus on ensuring students and families are aware of all the opportunities, with the latest information about where they can study as well as scholarship programmes they may not have heard about.’

As a mathematics teacher, Beth’s most inspiring moment was receiving contact from a former student who had just completed an engineering degree. She thanked Beth for encouraging her, in Year 9, to pursue mathematics into university, despite it not being her strongest subject at school.
